Celebrating 40 Years of Bangladeshi Women’s Association
One of Sandwell Consortium’s founding member organisations has turned 40! For more than four decades, the Bangladeshi Women’s Association (BWA) has been at the heart of the Sandwell community, offering practical, inclusive support to people of all ethnic backgrounds. From health and fitness sessions to legal advice, skills development and job support, the organisation has grown into one of the area’s most trusted places for help, learning and connection.
A Longstanding Commitment to Local Families
Founded to address the social and economic needs of disadvantaged young families, the BWA quickly became a strong advocate for community cohesion. Its work has helped reduce isolation, tackle poverty and build bridges between cultures ensuring that residents from any background, feel welcome and supported.
Today, more than 2,500 children and adults benefit from BWA services each year. Through employment support, skills training and language courses, the organisation has helped local families increase their income by millions of pounds, particularly supporting long-term unemployed women to re-enter the workforce.
Leaders Visit to Mark the 40th Anniversary
To celebrate this significant milestone, Richard Parker, Mayor of the West Midlands, and Cllr Kerrie Carmichael, Leader of Sandwell Council, visited the BWA’s headquarters at the Tipton Muslim Community Centre on Wellington Road. Their visit recognised the dedication of the volunteers and staff who have shaped the charity’s journey.

Voices From the Founders
A founding member reflected on how far the organisation has come: “In those days nearly all Asian community groups were run by men, so we were definitely different. But I’d like to think that being an all women group helped us connect with local people and build trust. And here we still are, not just helping Bangladeshi families but also improving the lives of men, women and children from all backgrounds, helping them meet life’s challenges but also enjoy life. We’ve built a safe, warm and happy place that has helped break down myths and misunderstandings between cultures. People come here and realise we are all just the same underneath.”
Growing Beyond Expectations
Now a registered charity with a growing footprint across Sandwell, the Bangladeshi Women’s Association also operates from the Jubilee Park Community Centre in Powis Avenue. The organisation even manages its own allotments, where families can learn to grow their own food, build confidence and spend meaningful time outdoors.
